At the news conference reported by China’s Supreme People’s Court on April 22, 2025:

In 2024, courts across the whole country accepted 529,370 new intellectual property cases (including 479,900 first-instance cases; wherein 44,255 patent cases; 124,918 trademark cases; 247,149 copyright cases), and concluded over 540,000 cases (including 494,100 first – instance cases). Last year, punitive damages were applied in 460 IP infringement cases, year – on – year increase of 44.2%. In the technical know – how infringement case of “new energy vehicle chassis (Geely Vs WM Motor)”, the Supreme People’s Court applied punitive damages as required by law, with the compensation amount of RMB 640 million (USD 87.5 million).

There are now 30 intellectual property tribunals in local courts nationwide, and 558 basic-level people’s courts have jurisdiction over intellectual property civil cases.

In 2024, the courts nationwide accepted 8,252 new first – instance intellectual property cases involving foreign parties.
