I. General Overview
Area: 528,000 square kilometers.
Population: 32.98 million. The vast majority are Arabs, and Arabic is the official language. Islam is the state religion, with Shia comprising 20-25% and Sunni comprising 75-80%.

II. Treaty Membership
1. Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property (Paris Convention)
Accession: 2007
Yemen has not yet joined the Madrid Agreement or the Madrid Protocol, nor has it joined the Hague Agreement and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). Therefore, Yemeni trademarks, designs and patents can only be applied for directly.
Due to the war in Yemen, Yemen is currently divided into two regions, Sana'a and Aden. Trademarks need to be applied for in both Sana'a and Aden to be fully protected.
III. Trademark Application Procedure and Required Documents
1. Trademark Registrable Elements and Types
Elements that can be registered as trademarks in Yemen include: text, graphics, symbols, slogans, three-dimensional logos, color combinations, sounds, motion graphics, holograms, location marks, etc.
The types of trademarks that can be registered in Yemen include: trademarks, service marks, collective trademarks, and certification trademarks.

⦁ If a priority is claimed, a certified copy of the priority document and its Arabic translation need to be submitted.
Remark:
a. The original of the power of attorney does not need to be provided when applying, but it must be submitted within 1 month from the date of application.
b. The applicant’s company business license or commercial registration must be notarized and legalized. If submitted in a language other than Arabic, an Arabic translation must be provided.
c. Alcoholic beverages in categories 33 and 32, pork products in category 29, and Christmas trees and related products in category 28 cannot be registered
4. Application Procedure and Timeline
Filing: The 9th edition of the Nice Classification is adopted; multiple-class applications are not allowed; the principle of first-to-file is followed;
Examination: formal examination and substantive examination
Publication/Opposition: the opposition period is 90 days
Registration: It takes about 6-9 months from filing to registration (if smooth).
5. Protection Period and Renewal
The validity period is 10 years from the date of application and can be renewed for 10 years each time before expiration
5. Assignment
Only registered trademarks can be assigned, and a notarized and legalized power of attorney and a notarized and legalized assignment agreement must be provided, and the processing period is approximately 6 months.
5. Chang of Name/Address
Trademark changes require a notarized and legalized power of attorney and a notarized and legalized proof of change, and the processing period is approximately 6 months.
8. Cancellation
Non-use Cancellation: If a trademark has not been used for 5 consecutive years, any interested party may file a cancellation request for the non-used trademark.
